If the idea of going to the gym gives you anxiety and traumatic memories of dodge ball or rope climbing, you’re not alone. The good news is that the world of fitness has evolved dramatically, and “exercise” means so much more today than just weight-lifting or cardio.

Whether you want to add some variety to your workouts, or weights and gyms aren’t your style, there are a number of unconventional fitness options to choose from. Find the ones you enjoy and, before you know it, you’ll actually be having fun with your fitness routine! Here are a few of our favorites.

Stretching

We all forget to do this but always stretch before and after any exercise or movement activities. Your body will thank you for it tomorrow. Stretching lengthens muscles, increases flexibility, and improves range of motion. And you can do it anywhere—even at work! Roll your neck and shoulders to stretch and relax your muscles that can tense up after a day at a keyboard. Extend and expand your lower back, hips, and legs after sitting or standing all day.

Ask us about Level’s Assisted Stretch Session, where one of our trained professionals helps move your body through a range of motion to achieve deeper, more effective stretches than you could typically do on your own

Dance

You don’t have to be a ballerina to enjoy dancing. Blast some music at home and let your body go. Combine this with household chores and cleaning your space becomes fun instead of annoying. And if you want more structure, there are plenty of dance classes to fit your style. Choose from Zumba, modern, Hip Hop, line dancing, or partner up with swing or ballroom dance.

Yoga

More than just stretches, twists, and balanced poses, yoga is a meditative practice. According to Yoga Alliance, “The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit root yuj, meaning “to unite” or join. This concept of unity lies at the heart of yoga, bringing together the body, mind, and spirit.”

Find a studio near you for group classes or roll out your mat and enjoy yoga in the privacy of your home. You can also try Pilates for more of a conditioning workout; sound baths for a meditative surround sound experience; or go all-in with Barre and combine ballet, Pilates, and yoga!

Social Sports

Between work and family, our busy lives leave little time for socializing. Enter social sports, like Nashville Sports Leagues. From pickleball to flag football to bowling, social sports combine fitness, fun, and community. With increasing popularity in recent decades, clubs and leagues can be found in almost every city across the country; creating opportunities for time with friends, networking, and even dating.

Playground Fun

Remember recess and running around the playground? Well, it’s time to let your inner child out to play! Grab a jump rope or hula hoop, let your feet touch the sky on the swings, hang upside down on a jungle gym, or swing on the monkey bars. Even a good old-fashioned game of hopscotch or tag will get your heartrate up and leave you smiling ear-to-ear.

Whatever your preference, enjoy exploring some unconventional fitness activities. Once you start moving, you won’t want to stop!
