As Director of Performance and Athletic Partnerships, Joe Frye (CSCS) leads athlete performance initiatives, designs individualized health and performance strategies, and cultivates partnerships with local athletic programs to strengthen community engagement. Joe brings more than 15 years of experience in college athletics, most recently on the coaching staff at Belmont University, where he was awarded the 2024 Missouri Valley Assistant Coach of the Year. A true Renaissance man, Joe is an Olympic Trials qualifier, Belmont Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, and musician-singer-songwriter-producer-audio engineer with a lifelong passion for helping others thrive and perform at their best.

How did you get into wellness, both personally and professionally?

My journey into wellness started with a deep passion for health and performance. For years, I approached it through the lens of athletics—coaching others towards healthy habits and prioritizing consistency while encouraging them to steer clear of quick fixes like crash diets or fad workouts. Over time, my focus evolved, and I began to see wellness not just as a means to reach peak performance, but as a lifelong pursuit of health and longevity. When the opportunity at Level came along, it felt like the perfect fit—a chance to transition from a transformational career in collegiate athletics into a space where I could help others thrive for the long run.

What excites you most about being part of Level?

What excites me most is the limitless potential to transform lives. We’re not just helping people improve; we’re guiding them to reinvent themselves from the inside out. Whether it’s supporting someone at the start of their wellness journey or partnering with those already deeply invested to give them a clearer, higher-resolution view of their health as they enter new chapters of life, the impact is profound. On top of that, I get to work alongside an incredibly creative team of experts who collaborate seamlessly to make these transformations possible.

What misconceptions about wellness do you wish people understood?

One of the biggest misconceptions about wellness is that it requires cutting-edge technology and a team of scientists to get started. While that can eventually be an impactful strategy for some, the first step toward a healthier you can be as simple as an honest conversation paired with a little education. Those small shifts can give you the tools to start to take back control of your life and feel better every single day. At Level, we have an incredible team ready to guide and support you on whatever path towards wellness you’re ready to take, but ultimately, the power lies with you. When you’re ready to take the initiative, we’ll be right there, cheering you on every step of the way.

In addition to being a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, you're also a multi-faceted musician-singer-songwriter-producer-audio engineer. In 2022, you released the album, Christmas at the Coffeehouse. How do these aspects of your life blend together? How does your musical side show up in your work as a trainer, or vice versa?

For as long as I can remember, I've operated in both spaces—athletics and music—and I’ve always been a bit of a maverick in each. Music and training share common threads: rhythm, creativity, and connection. Producing an album taught me how to layer elements for harmony and holistic design, which mirrors how I approach programming workouts—balancing strength, recovery, and progression like instruments in a mix, always keeping the individual in mind.

In human performance, I establish goals and identify red flags, then use creativity to design plans clients love and environments where they can thrive. On the music side, I bring structure and discipline to projects that often start as sporadic ideas, helping shape them into something cohesive and digestible. Both worlds require listening closely—whether to the body or the notes—and that interplay keeps me sharp, creative, and deeply engaged in everything I do.
